The year is 2006 and an army soldier is killed in action in Iraq.
Since March 2003, this scenario has played out over 4,000 times. In most cases, the immediate family of the deceased is personally notified by Army officials. The family is counseled, comforted and assisted by their “military family”. But, if the soldier killed in action is gay or lesbian, like SSgt. Alana Ridings, the scenario plays out in a totally different manner. Our independent short film Survived by..., features the fictional Ridings family and highlights some of these very real differences.
